New Fabric in Store this Week - August 11

This week we have a new range called I Am Ninja from Robert Kaufman which features the cutest little ninja warriors you ever did see. We have also added to our needlework section with some plain white cotton tea towels and 1/2 aprons for you to embroider. These would make great gifts and Christmas is fast approaching :)

Speaking of needlework, there was a bit of a hiccup with the DMC thread listings last weekend but this is all fixed and all of the colours should now be available. Till next week.

New Fabric and Haberdashery in Store this Week - August 3

This week we received some more laminated cotton fabrics from Alexander Henry. We have these designs at the special price of $30/m until the 10th August after which time they will increase to $35/m.

We have also uploaded all of the DMC threads onto the website, there is a separate listing for each colour so if you are after a particular colour you can type it into the search bar at the top of the webpage and find it that way easily.

For most of July we were working towards shuffling around the showroom to make more room for stock. WE have moved our office and sewing table into the small back room and opened up the area where the office used to be.
All of our You Sew Girl bag samples are now displayed nicely up on the back wall (at least they will be once I buy more hooks, we have a lot of bags :). Our rolls of fabric are no long bunched up near the front door. We have a nice open area to set up for classes and we don't have to hide the pattern racks away in the back room anymore. Feedback on the new space has been very positive and the showroom feels heap bigger and brighter.

That's all for this week, next week we will be prepping for Rockabilly Riot which is at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre on the 10th and 11th. The showroom will still be open during this event but please be aware that some of the stock may not be available so please call ahead if you are after something in particular.

Catch you later bunnies

Fabric Friday - Alexander Henry's Matisse

The Matisse range by Alexander Henry is inspired by the artwork of Henri Matisse.

Left to right - Young Girl with a Yellow Sofa, Interior with an Etruscan Vase, Music
I don't know if there was one painting in particular that inspired this collection but these three painting, which were painted by Matisse between 1919-1942, have a similar feel to the main Vie En Rose print.

Vie En Rose is just calling out to be made into a bag, perhaps a Carry All or a Hobo bag to really do the print justice. Teamed with the yellow Pine Stickers or the light green Outfoxed Stripe for the lining. Hmm I need to make a hobo sample...
Here is our Poppet Purse made from the Amelie Rose print with additional embroidery over one of the roses. Looks quite classy I think.

I really think that I may need to make up that hobo bag very soon :)

Fabric Friday - Prehistoric Dinosaurs by Alexander Henry

Cloud prides herself on being able to find co-ordinates for any fabric so I decided to challenge her this week. I asked for 6 fabrics and one of them had to be Prehistoric by Alexander Henry. This is what she came up with.

Fabric Friday - Spooktacular Halloween Fabrics by Blend Fabrics

Halloween is every day here at Voodoo Rabbit! Team it up with a retro repro / vintage feel and it really pings on our fabric radar. We don’t really like the ‘traditional’ pumpkin fabrics that are available for Halloween but this range is the exception to the rule! Spooktacular has been designed for Blend Fabrics by Maude Asbury (she also designed the Crabtastic range that Cloud loved so much). Bright pumpkin orange, black, greys & chartreuse green combine beautifully. The colours are bright and punchy but still have that retro look with the use of 50’s Letraset style shading dots. The designs are simple and reminiscent of Americana advertising signage and have bold images of Witches Brew bottles, skitty-kitty Cats, grinning Jack O Lanterns and flying Bats. Just perfect!

As an added bonus, Blend Fabrics also have a free PDF pattern download for this rather fetching table runner! I (Ky) want to make this up so much – I am a sucker for the stained glass look and the fabrics themselves are just too yummy to resist. Perfect hallway decoration for Trick or Treat time this year, no?

Are you decorating for Halloween this year? We’d love to know what decorations you make / sew / create for one of the most fun days of the year.

Stitches and Craft Show Brisbane 2013

The Brisbane Stitches & Craft Show 2013 is less than a week away & it's going to be HUGE! We have been prepping lots of new kits, cutting & folding new fabrics and packaging up bag hardware for weeks and we cannot wait for the Show to start.

We have to admit it, we've been holding out on you. There are brand new Alexander Henry Pinup Boys that we are launching exclusively at the Stitches & Craft Show. Check out these bad boys, vampires and werewolves reminiscent of a certain book series! They are so hilariously campy cute we just had to get them in for you.
Ready for Action | Wranglers | October Moon (exclusive to Craft Show)

The Ready for Action Firemen and our ever popular Wrangler Cowboys from Alexander Henry will also be back on the stand.
White Rabbit Cushion Kits (exclusive to Craft Show) | Paint the Roses Red 150mm Poppet Purse Kit | Tuxedo 300mm Snap Purse Kit
We have loads of kits / projects ready to go including the best Steampunk White Rabbit ever to grace a cushion. We were inspired to create a bit of an Alice in Wonderland theme with our purse samples and we've made up the cutest Poppet Purse kit - Paint the Roses Red. The Queen of Hearts would love it.

We are also super excited because we will be right next door to Funky Friends Factory. We have made up fabric kits for a heap of Pauline's awesome toy designs, here is a small sneak peek of our newest kits.

Raff Giraffe | Zebra | Wodger the Wombat
The Brisbane Stitches & Craft Show runs from March 21-24 and is open daily from 10am - 4.30pm. More information on the show can be found on their website.

Unfortunately we can't be in two places at once so we will be closing our showroom while we set up and attend the show. We will be closed from Sunday 17th March and will reopen on Tuesday 26th March. We are still taking online orders and will do our best to keep out delivery times as fast as possible.

If you go to the show make sure you stop by Stand E09 and say hi :)

New Alexander Henry Fabric | Pinup, Zebras, Bright Spots and Mexico

One of our favourite fabric brands is Alexander Henry, in fact these fabrics are the reason we opened up a fabric store to begin with. The print quality and base cloth is always of highest quality and is perfect for sewing clothing.

We have had a few new Alexander Henry fabrics arrive and they are all now available in showroom and on our website.

This is a 50% reduction of the popular Aloha Girls print

We should have another box of Alexander Henry fabrics arriving in a few weeks, we can't wait to show you what's in it :)

Organic A Go Go - Monaluna & Cloud 9 Organic Cotton Fabrics

We are gradually increasing the range of organic cotton fabrics that we stock here at Voodoo Rabbit Fabric. Our current range of organic cottons include retro cars and scooter from Monaluna, super cute pirates from Cloud 9, mice and sheep in very unexpected colours from Kokka and The Lorax from Robert Kaufman.
Although organic cottons cost a bit more than others, we feel that they are well worth the extra money per metre. We believe that sewing in itself is an environmentally friendly pursuit. By sewing, mending and recycling our own clothes and accessories we are reducing waste in landfill. DIY items also reduce our dependence on mass produced, sweatshop made clothing. Choosing to sew using organic cotton just takes us one step further along the eco-friendly spectrum :)

Havana Collection by Monaluna Fabric

GOTS-certified organic cotton is produced using no toxic chemicals throughout the entire production process, ensuring a healthier working environment for the farmers and mill workers, and a healthier, higher-quality product for the end user. Additionally, the GOTS certification signifies that the product is fair-trade, ensuring that it was produced under safe, healthy and equitable conditions. Read more about the Global Organic Textile Standard(GOTS) and what it covers here.

We'd be interested to know if any of you have sewn with organic cotton, did you notice the difference?

Learn to Sew Lesson 1 is in the bag

Our first Learn to Sew Class with StephC went swimmingly with all of the students finishing their tote bags before the end of class.

Don't they look great and very practical as well. The bags are made from heavy weight cotton/linen or cotton canvas fabric with 38mm webbing for the handles.

Next week we will be starting to make up a basic knit top using Steph's blank canvas tee pattern. My introduction to sewing knits was with Steph with this pattern so I can attest to its ease to sew and fit. It should be a lot of fun.

If you are interested in learning to sew please drop us a line at sales[@]voodoorabbit.com.au and we will add you to our waiting list for our next course.

The general sewing class is suitable for anyone who has a working knowledge of basic sewing, but would like to explore more intermediate/advanced sewing and wardrobing concepts with an experienced and patient mentor. Relax and enjoy a friendly social sewing atmosphere while Steph simplifies your sewing. From children’s clothes to couture, pattern fitting to finishing details, home dec to light leatherwork, Steph will guide your sewing projects and help you build skills to reach your ultimate sewing dream.

The first class will run on Jan 27 and there will be two sessions of 3 hours each. You can choose to come to the morning, afternoon or both sessions.

If you would like to sign up or see more information please head over to our website or pop in and see us at our East Brisbane Showroom.

You will need to bring your sewing machine and any tools or patterns related to your project of choice. Each class will be different from every other class - you can pick up new and unexpected skills and techniques from your fellow students and from Steph as she teaches on the spot mini-lessons.

There will be a maximum of 4 students per class to ensure personal attention.

If you can't sew and have always wanted to learn to sew you might like to try one of our Beginner Sewing Courses.

Happy Sewing :)
