What's New At Voodoo Rabbit Fabric - June 22
Who doesn't love dinosaurs? We are always on the lookout for a new dinosaur print and this week the latest one from Benartex Fabrics has arrived. Featuring all of your favourite dinosaurs, it is available in either bright or khaki. It is a perfect fabric for a pair of overalls, book bags or even kindy sheets for your little one.
We were at an industry trade show the other week and stumbled across a new range of bag patterns from an American designer called Jen Fox. Each pattern has it's own unique design feature whether it be pockets, gathering, patched piecing or even basketweave. Most are suited for advanced beginners/intermediate sewists. The gathered bag is aimed at beginners who would like to get started in bag making.

New In Store - 15th June 2014
It is no secret that we here at Voodoo Rabbit love Halloween fabric. One of the reasons that we wanted to open our own fabric shop was so that we could stock some of the cool Halloween fabrics that generally do not make it to your average Australian fabric shop.
We are always super excited when Alexander Henry Fabrics release their Halloween lineup as they always have something a bit different and this year is better than most!! We have just received our latest shipment and included are the Halloween fabrics below. Crafty Calaveras and Midnight Muertos have everything you could ever want in a Halloween fabric including skeletons, pumpkins and bats with a bit of a Mexican Day of the Dead thrown in for good measure. Even though they are halloween fabrics we think that any of these fabrics would make awesome rockabilly dresses for any time of the year.
We have been on the lookout for a really good Zombie fabric but so far all of the ones that have been released have been of cutesy zombies, not that there is anything wrong with that. We, and a number of our customers, have been hanging out for something a bit grittier though and now it is here. Zombie! from Alexander Henry has Walking Dead style Zombies in all of their rotting glory, we have only had this one for a few days but it is already selling fast.

At the other end of the fabric spectrum we have some new vintage reproduction fabrics from Moda. We picked these two as we thought they lent themselves to a number of easy-to-sew projects. The block pattern can be used to make a simple cheater quilt, soft toy cubes, a little layered skirt etc. The co-ordinating stripe print can be used to make little tags for the quilt and blocks, or cute little ruffles/binding on a skirt.
We have been asked on a number of occasions if we stock kids clothing patterns, we have had some dress patterns from You Sew Girl but we have been on the look out for a new designer. I (Ky) met Monica Poole at a trade event I attended back in February and was lucky enough to do a workshop with her. She is the loveliest lady and I thought her patterns were easy and fun to make. We are happy to announce that we now have a range of Monica's patterns available for you to purchase. The patterns are easy to follow with step-by-step instruction and full size pattern pieces. There are no buttonholes or zips making them ideal for beginner or time poor sewist ;) There are 6 kids patterns as well as a ladies wrap skirt and a backpack pattern.

New in Store - 8 June 2014
Some very cute new additions to the store this week in the form of Lily the Ladybug pattern from Funky Friends Factory and a new Alice in Wonderland range from Cosmo Textiles. I think we now have the full set of flamingo fabrics with Magnolia Flamingos from Riley Blake :) Speaking of Riley Blake we also have all of the incredibly popular regular pom pom trim back in stock.

We are introducing a new range of Tips and Tricks classes to help you learn new techniques to help you produce professional results with your dressmaking. The first one is on buttonholes, in this intensive full day class you will learn how to sew buttonholes on your sewing machine with confidence! You will create a sample-sewing workbook while learning a variety of techniques and strategies for taming buttonholes of all varieties.
This class will be run by Steph C of Cake Patterns, if you have attended any of Steph's other classes you will know how much fun you can have while learning very practical sewing skills :)

Pattern Test Drive - The Sling Bag by You Sew Girl
Today we are going to show off our new You Sew Girl Sling Bag. It is made out of a lovely Sweet Potato Orange Denim which matches fantastically with the feature panel of Kokka Sun Bear fabric. It is a fairly easy pattern suited to adventurous beginner to intermediate sewist. If you have made any You Sew Girl bags before then you will be able to whip this one up with no trouble at all.
The finished bag measures approx. 25cm x 25cm x 13cm (9-7/8" x 9-7/8" x 5-1/8") excluding the strap. The strap is grown on and can be lengthened and shortened as desired. This is the length straight off the pattern which is fine for a small petite person like our size 8 mannequin here but if you are taller/larger then you may need to lengthen it a bit.
There is an optional zippered pocket in the lining which is handy for holding all of those little bits and bobs that can get lost inside your handbag.
The feature fabric we chose is a bit lighter than the denim so we decided to appliqué it onto the denim rather than piecing the two together. A quick tip for folding over the raw edges of the overlay piece is to use 1/4" Quilter's Edge which is a double-sided iron on adhesive tape.
- Cut two strips for the feature panels, one for the front and one for the back.
- Iron the Quilter's Edge onto the wrong side of each of the long edges, fold over and press again to get a very neat 1/4" seam.
- To attached the overlays onto the bag you can either use vliesofix (or similar) over the entire piece or just use more of the Quilter's Edge on the sides (which is what we have done).
- Top-stitch 2mm in from the edge of the overlay to hold it in place permanently.
Hardware
You can get away with having no hardware on this bag, though it is suggested to use a magnetic snap as a closure. As always you can add O-rings, oblong rings etc to jazz up and/or lengthen the strap.
Interfacing
The sling bag is a soft and slouchy bag so it can have minimal to no interfacing. The denim we have used is quite heavy so we have used a medium/light woven fusible interfacing on the facing pieces only (excluding the strap facing). There is a hard Peltex base to give the bag some shape.
