New in Store - 2nd April 2017
Thus week I have added in a few new Echino designs from Kokka, these are printed on a lovely thick cotton/linen substrate. From Robert Kaufman I have some new vintage inspired designs including 1920's fashion, sewing notions and posters. In bag hardware I now have 25mm o-rings and gunmetal 18mm magnetic snaps.

New in Store - 18th September 2016
In addition to all the regular shop work I have been super busy making new bag samples for the 2016 Brisbane Craft and Quilt FairThis week I made the Rockstar Bag designed by Sew Sweetness. I have
used True Love Tattoo Black By Andover Fabric as the exterior fabric, Ed Hardy Love Is True Roses Light Grey By Quilting Treasures for the lining and the red accent fabric is my go to Premium Solid Tomato (24) By Northcott. I have added the rockstar edge with rivets (coming to the website next week !!) and metal spikes (new in store this week).
This bag is interfaced with Medium Weight Woven Fusible Interfacing on the lining and In-R-Form foam stabilser on the exterior. At times you will be sewing through 1/2" of foam stabiliser on this bag so you will need a sewing machine that can handle these kind of thicknesses. I found that my little Brother Innovis-950 couldn't handle the bulk (broke 5 needles learning this :/) but my Janome Memory Craft 4900 handled it fine. When sewing bags with a lot of stabilisers in them I find that a some form of double sided adhesive tape is brilliant for holding straps and zippers in place before sewing. It is also invaluable when inserting the piping and the bias tape on the lining seam, in fact I think that I used most a roll on this bag ;)
Overall this bag can be a little challenging purely due to the bulk of the foam stabiliser but the level of difficulty will come down to your sewing machine.
I think you will all agree that the finished product is pretty awesome and worth a little effort :)
I still found time to list some new products over on the website, check them all out below :) I believe that Hot Wheels has been discontinued by Alexander Henry so this may be the last time that I will be able to stock it.

New in Store - 28th August 2016
I'm very excited to announce that I now stock Cork fabric. Also known as vegan or cork leather, it is perfect for sewing on a home sewing machine! Great for bags and wallets. It is created by adhering thin slices of natural cork onto a Poly/cotton fabric backing. It is available in a range of colours and really adds that professional finish to a project.

New in Store - 14th August 2016
I have had so many new fabrics come in over the last week or two that is is going to take me a few weeks to get them all up on the website. This week I have added a couple of Cotton & Steel fabrics from the Playful and Tokyo Train Ride Collections.
Frida's garden in the home decorator weight are back in the ever popular black and tea colour, be quick if you want either of these as they generally don't last long.
For those of the rockabilly persuasion there are flamingos, zombie pinup girls, day of the dead and tattoo sewing notions.
Vintage Vogue and Butterick ladies dress patterns have also been restocked with an addition of a new Circa 1954 close-fitting dress with low scoop neckline bodice extending into cap sleeves, upper bodice front gathers, darted at waist, flared skirt.

New in Store - 7th August 2016
Just a quick new in store post today as I am busy with Greazefest all weekend. I have two new ranges to share with you today. A funky urban range from Moda Fabric called Dapper and a fun drawing themed fabric from Robert Kaufman called Design Basics. In the way of sewing workshops there is a new skirt class to make a Dirndl Skirt which is a a full, wide skirt with a tight waistband.

New in Store - 26th June 2016
I've been a bit under the weather this week but I have done my best to get a few new items up on the website. I have some new bag bling from Emmaline Bags including metal edge trim and new oval bag handles that screw on instead of using prongs making them much more secure. The very popular blood platter fabric from Robert Kaufman has also come back into stock, this one usually sells out pretty fast so be quick so you don't miss out.
Last week mesh fabric came back into stock with a couple of new colours. If you are unfamiliar with this product it is great for adding pockets to bags and organisers that are slightly stretchy and allows you to see what is inside. If you are on the look out for a pattern that utilises the mesh there are several good ones from Patterns by Annie available now.

I'm away at the Australia Quilt Market (poor cousin to the Houston Quilt Market) down in Melbourne this weekend. There is so much exciting new fabric being released in the next year and I can't wait until it all arrives. New in Store - 25 October 2014
This week we have received a few more designs from the Robert Kaufman Classic Horror Films collection including blood splatter on white and a horror movie poster panel. These are great designs for any last minute Halloween crafting or to be stored until next year ;)
We have a couple of new Riley Blake Knit fabrics including a cute little owl floral. This single knit jersey is a quality 95% cotton/5% spandex mix with great recovery and non pilling.
For anyone who was waiting for any Sewline or You Sew Girl Patterns or Bag Hardware we have just received a new shipment of these as well. Speaking of bag hardware we have been able to source coloured webbing, we have 38mm navy blue to start with, please let us know if you have any colours that you would like and we will do our best to get them in.

New in Store - 19 October 2014
It has been a busy few weeks with the Brisbane Craft and Quilt Show. I think we are finally back to normal so that means I have time to start listing new fabric on the website. This week we have mostly new Alexander Henry fabrics from the Nicole's Prints, Folklorico, Santa Fe and Halloween collections. We have two fantastic new Alice in Wonderland designs from Cosmo textiles in Japan which were very popular at the Craft Fair. In fact there is less than half a bolt of each remaining. Last but not least is a horror movie blood splatter print from Robert Kaufman.

Pattern Test Drive - The City Bag by You Sew Girl
Sadly it is time to retire our La Virgencita You Sew Girl City Bag sample, it has served us well but we have been sold out of this fabric for a while now and I wanted to try a new interfacing combination on a new one.
This new version is more vibrant and features Spot On Pindot Cardinal Red combined with a panel of Vintage Scrapbook Paris Fashion Black on the front and back. The city bag is fairly easy to sew with the trickiest part being inserting the zipper on the curved top of the bag. Even this isn't too difficult as Nicole's patterns alway have very good instructions and photos to guide you through all of the steps.
The finished bag is approximately 30cm (11-7/8") x 34cm (13-1/2") x 10cm (4") excluding the strap. The pattern includes instructions for adding both a zippered pocket (above) and compartment pocket (below) in the lining, you can never have too many pockets in a bag :)
Hardware
Hardware is optional for the strap on this bag but it always makes the finished bag look more professional. This bag features an adjustable strap by using a Slide Adjusters, Swivel Snap Hook and a D-Ring.
Interfacing
On the La Virgencita City Bag I used Vilene S320 interfacing on its own with no wadding. While the S320 gave the bag a good structure it felt a bit too cardboardy for my liking. This time I have used S320 again but I have also added a layer of H630 wadding which softens the finish a bit as well as providing more structure. S320 is also fused to the strap which is 4 layers thick once it has been folded and topstitched. The result is a thin but sturdy strap that doesn't feel like it is going to break once you fill the bag with all of your stuff.

Serendipity Studio Camilla Insulated Lunch Bag Pattern Test Drive (with tips for sewing with laminated cottons)
For Christmas last year I made my Mum the Camilla Insulated Lunch Bag from Serendipity Studio. There are several sizes available in this pattern and it can be made as an insulated lunch bag or as a non-insulated tote bag.
Today I am going to share a few tips and tricks that you may find helpful when sewing up this bag.
I chose to make the medium size insulated version of the bag. To make things extra tricky I have used laminated cotton on both the inside and outside. Handy if you have a spill as you can simply wipe the bag clean.
Always use a pressing cloth so that you don't touch the iron directly onto the laminated side of the fabric. I keep the temperature fairly low as well. Nothing is worse than melted laminate on your iron.
To add structure and insulation I used Insul-Bright by The Warm Company. The contents of your lunch bag is kept hot / cold by this specialty interfacing. It is non-fusible so the layers need to be quilted together.
505 Spray Adhesive is great for sticking layers together while quilting. It holds everything in place but won't gum up your machine needle. When using a spray adhesive use a cardboard box or similar to make a spray booth so that you don't end up with glue all over your work table like I have :) If you are looking for 505 Spray Adhesive, we stock it in our showroom.
When topstitching or quilting the bag you can't sew directly over the laminated cotton with a regular metal presser foot. It sticks to the laminate and your fabric won't feed through the machine. A Teflon foot is recommended for sewing with laminated fabric, but you can also use baking paper. Just place it on top of the laminate, under your regular presser foot and sew. Once you are finished stitching, tear away the baking paper. You can also draw your quilting lines onto the baking paper which makes sewing straight lines a lot easier too!
Pinning beyond your seam allowance lines is also a no-no with laminated fabrics because they leave permanent marks. Clover Wonder Clips are a great alternative. You can use them to peg the baking paper to your fabric and not leave any holes.
Sewing on the velcro was a cinch once I basted it down with some more 505 Adhesive Spray.
A little mini iron is perfect for getting inside the bag to fuse the Peltex base.
The final bag construction requires you to stitch through two layers of fabric plus two layers of Insul-Bright which makes for quite a bit of bulk. Even if you aren't using laminated cotton all of these layers would be too thick to pin together. Clover Clips to the rescue!

Show and Tell - Christmas Present Sewing 2013
For the past couple of years I have been making gifts for the majority of my family for Christmas. Now that it is over and everyone has their gifts I can show off everything that I sewed this year :) I left almost everything to the last two weeks before Christmas (majority were done in the 3 days before, I finished at midnight on Christmas Eve.) which is something I hope to avoid next year.
For my mum I made the Camilla Insulated Bag Pattern by Sew Serendipity. I have used laminated cotton for both the inside and outside of the bag so that it is water proof. Sewing with a double layer of laminated cotton plus the insulated wadding was a bit of a challenge but I think the finished product and the fact that it is waterproof both inside and out made it worthwhile. The binding, trim and Kanzashi flower are all regular cotton.

The first part of Cloud's present was a Dr Seuss One Fish, Two Fish Pyjama set. I drafted the pattern for the boxer shorts and I used Steph's Blank Canvas Tee Pattern for the top. I have adjusted the neck line and used cotton bias made from the Dr Seuss fabric to bind it. The tee shirt fabric is a Jersey cotton I found at The Fabric Store.
The second part of Cloud's present was another pyjama set, this time using a cute Hello Kitty dobby fabric I picked up last time I was in Japan. Once again the tee shirt is the blank canvas tee which I have embellished with some appliqué plum blossom flowers. I would have liked to have bound the neck in the same fabric as the shorts but I only had 1m which was just enough for the shorts and the appliqué.
For my eldest sister I made another pair of pyjamas using a Marvel comic fabric I also picked up last time I was in Japan. I embellished the tee shirt with a simple patch pocket.
There was just enough of the comic fabric to make a flap for a satchel bag as well.
For my youngest sister I made a Ghastlie Holiday dress, the pattern is an adaption of The Marilyn Dress Pattern by Sew Serendipity and of course the fabric is A Ghastlie Holiday Mauve by Alexander Henry. The lace trim on the bottom is something I found in my stash.
and because Cloud obviously doesn't have enough pyjamas I also made her a set for her birthday. I picked up this Hello Kitty fabric during my travels. The Hello Kitty face on the tee shirt is an appliqué I made and they were packed up in a cute little drawstring bag.
