Voodoo Rabbit Workshops for 2013

Have you just started sewing and feel that you need some guidance?
Don't despair little Bunnehs, maybe all you need are a few lessons to get you started on the right track.

We have been keen to test out the suitability of our little Showroom for teaching classes for a while now and we finally got the chance. Last Saturday we hosted our very first workshop, it was run by Steph from 3 Hours Past the Edge of the World. We all had a lovely afternoon chatting, drinking tea and stitching.

After the success of Steph's class we are keen to start running a series of workshops in the New Year. We are very interested to know what you would like to learn so if you could take a few seconds (there are only 3 questions) to fill in our survey, this will help us organise when and what we teach this year.

Create your free online surveys with SurveyMonkey, the world's leading questionnaire tool.

The classes are going to be small and intimate - classes requiring a sewing machine will have a maximum of 4 students but embroidery classes and demonstrations can have 6 to 8 people. Keeping the classes small also means more time for each student with the teacher and hopefully a much better learning experience for you!
More info to come in the New Year

Gnoma Claus is Coming To Town ♪♫

Winterkist is the new Christmas range by Happy Zombie (Monica Solorio-Snow) for Lecien.

Some of you may recognise the Gnoma Claus character from her previous fabric range, Holiday Happy. This range is a lot brighter and we love the new co-ordinates and colours Monica has chosen. We have Winterkist in the Green, Blue, Red & Gray colourways as show above.

Another improvement is the layout of the Gnoma Claus panel. For Holiday Happy the Gnoma Claus were laid out in a way that only allowed for the Gnomas to be made up into plushies. For Winterkist, Monica has changed the format so that panel contains 18 Gnoma plushie fronts in 5 sizes ranging from 18cm/7in up to 38cm/15in tall. The Winterkist panel layout is much more adaptable as it can be used as meterage for making bags, Christmas sacks, Christmas stockings, etc. Each Gnoma front can also be fussy cut and used to make projects like the cute coasters below.

Coaster

Instructions on making pot holder/hot pad can be found here. The original instructions are for Holiday Happy but the process is still the same. We used 4 small Gnomas from the Winterkist Gnoma Claus Blue Panel and backed them with a plain aqua blue fabric to make these cute little coasters. Perfect for an Aussie summer Christmas pool party!

Plushies
Our Gnoma Plushies are also made from the Winterkist Gnoma Claus Blue Panel and backed with Winterkist Squareflakes Blue.

Making these guys is super easy:

  1. Cut out one or more individual Gnoma Claus from the fabric panel, leaving at least 5mm / 1/4 inch extra fabric around the outline of the Gnoma for seam allowance.
  2. Place the Gnoma and the backing fabric right sides together and pin in place.
  3. To make the hanger tab, place a piece of folded ribbon at the tip of the hat between the two layers. The loop should sit inside the body and the ends should stick out from the seam allowance.
  4. Sew around the Gnoma's outline, make sure to leave an opening for turning out (we left approx. 8cm gap on the bottom of each Gnoma).
  5. Trim the seam allowance back and clip the curves, turn right side out.
  6. Stuff your Gnoma with Toy fill (polyfill, toy stuffing).
  7. Slip stitch the opening closed.
  8. Hang up your Gnoma Claus Christmas decorations for everyone to admire.

If you are after even more Gnoma Claus projects you could also try this tote bag (perhaps as a possible Christmas Stocking replacement). Once again it has been written for the Holiday Happy panel but it should translate ok.

Happy crafting!

Stitch n Bitch - Wednesday 30th May

Frock Out at Piece Together

It has been far too long since we got out and about (or blogged either but we'll forget about that) so last night we took ourselves down to Piece Together for their first Frock Out night. Frock Out was run by Steph from 3 Hours Past the Edge of the World to give us all an opportunity to show off that dress you made and love and never wear and come meet other like-minded sewists. Cloud cheated and got me to sew her dress for her. I think it turned out pretty well!

Trim Fabric: Navy wool / linen blend picked up at East Coast Fabrics
Pattern: Simplicity 4072 (discontinued)

I at least made Cloud cut out the fabric (I'd sew a LOT more if I didn't have to do the cutting out / prep work first!). I wore my Kitty Kokeshi dress but didn't get a picture - Cloud was too busy hogging the limelight to let me get a snap. I promise to photograph it soon.

There were loads of lovely ladies in attendance including Tammie & Jennine from Piece Together and Steph in her amazing Tuxedo Dress. Mexican noms were also provided. We love it - usually on sewing nights, Cloud & I make either nachos or burritos so we were well impressed by the offerings last night!

Delicious Mexican Noms from The Burrito Bar

Full house at the fab Piece Together sewing studio!

Not only did we get to Frock Out, we also got our craft on. Steph ran a tutorial on making Dior Style Silk Roses. Put together as a triplet, the roses make gorgeous hair accessories or brooches.

Cloud pretending that she didn't just sew the wrong sized petal on her rose...

Craftiness in action. Note Cloud's glass of wine in the foreground. She is adamant it did not contribute to rose-wonkiness.

The finished roses! Cloud put hers into her hair immediately then swanned around showing them off. I attached mine to a simple black You Sew Girl Party Purse that I whipped up especially for the night.

We need to go out more often to events like this - we had a great night and loved showing off our handmade clothes and accessories.

If you want to make Dior Roses for yourself (they are super easy) you can find the tutorial here on Steph's blog. Also make sure you check out the new Piece Together workshop timetable - the space is amazing to work in and the projects are cool to make too.
