My Creative Space...

This week we are starting preparations for the Kustom Kraft market on May 23rd. It will only be the third market that we have done and we thought that it was time to spruce up the stall a bit.

First up some red and black felt bunting for along the front of the table.

Ironing bias binding, the epitome of excitement and burnt fingers

Pinned up and ready for sewing

Even though we predominantly sell fabric and buttons at our stall it is always nice to round things out with a few handmade items.

Some Voodoo Rabbit skins ready for Cloud to put together this weekend
(told you I would be cracking the whip)

Another Kustom Kraft Market Over

Papa Squee and his clan of mini Squees
On Sunday we attended the last Kustom Kraft market to be held in Brisbane for a while as the organiser is moving down to Melbourne. The Kustom Kraft Market was the first market that we ever held a stall at back in November last year, we have certainly come a long way since then.

We have had to rethink our stall layout again, we now have so much fabric that we just don't have car space to take it all anymore (plus we were one car down on Sunday since my little Torana had broken down a few days before). For future markets we will be displaying all of the fabric that we have meterage for on the front rack and the rest will be available as fat quarters only.

The last of Cloud's Voodoo Rabbit plushies sold and we have discontinued them in favour of the felt Squee bunnys. If anyone is interested we may release the Voodoo Rabbits as a pattern.
The Sugar Shakers
The Sugar Shakers were the first of the three bands that played during the day, because of the rain the bands were set up inside the hall. Each band was good but as they progressed they seemed to get louder, as you can imagine in a small hall this was a bit hard on the ears. The other two bands were The Vampers and Graveyard Rumble.

There was also a food available for the first time ever, the Greaser Burger was awesome.

Valley Laneway Market Roundup

We had a great time at the Valley Laneway Markets yesterday. We arrived early and got a very nice spot in Winn lane right next to the Flamingo Cafe. Since we had a bit of space around us we decided to try out a new stall layout, what do you think?
We also had heaps of new fabrics, some of which haven't been listed in our online shops yet. The panels were popular especially these guys (who have just been listed today) they all come on one panel and you simply cut them out and sew them together.

Other popular items were the Domestic Diva, Gnomeville and Alice in Wonderland panels (only 2 Alice panels left).

It was all too much excitment for this puppy who had a snooze next to our stall, we know how she felt, we were both very tired by the end of the day as well.

Next weekend is the Kustom Kraft Markets at the Jagera Arts Centre, 121 Cordelia Street, South Brisbane.

Hope you all had a great weekend as well.

September Market Update

This month we were planning on attending at least three markets. Due to a forecast of rain we have decided against attending Southbank Markets this Sunday 5th September. We don't want to risk getting the fabric wet which I'm sure you all understand.

Barring further rain we will be attending the following markets:

Valley Laneway Markets
- Sunday 12th September

Kustom Kraft Markets
- Sunday 19th September

We have no market plans for the weekend of the 25/26th so we might try to do Southbank Markets then, we will keep you posted.

My Creative Space

I haven't had time to work on anything new this week so I thought that I would show off something that I have managed to finish, my Pink Skull Pinstripe shirt.

I managed to finish it in time for the Kustom Kraft Market and I also wore it to the Craft Fair on Tuesday. It is a much better fit than the first shirt of this style that I made. I shortened it by approximately 6cm (yes I am that short) and made a slight adjustment to to the side bodice so that the armhole no longer gaped. One other improvement to this shirt is that the number of eyelets dropped from 44 to 36 and I bought a pair of eyelet pliers to insert them, making the process much faster and neater.

What have you been working on recently?

Kustom Kraft Market - 23 May 2010

We had a great market day yesterday at Kustom Krafts. The stall set up was totally overhauled for this market and we think it made a huge difference.

This is what our stall used to look like:

Pretty underwhelming wasn't it! We've now progressed to this:

To start, we made bunting. We didn't have it at our previous market stalls. I drew the bunny head shape and Ky cut it out of felt using the Klik n Kut machine. Ky made the bunting last week and then glued the shapes to the triangles. Pretty nifty, even if we do say so ourselves! We used the same bunny head shape for our product tags.

Can you see all the bunny heads? We love the way they tied the whole look of the stall together. We put all of our smaller lengths of fabrics onto half size bolts and then arranged them into tubs. We stacked them up so they looked like shelves in a real store. It saved room on the table top for us to feature our handmade cushions and bags.

The best modification would have to be our new rack for displaying our fat quarters. It is made from the sides of a recycled wooden cot that we added a hinge to and then painted. Putting the fat quarters up this way was a vast improvement from having them piled up on the table like we used to do. It kept the table tidy, drew attention to our stall (nice and colourful) and also helped us to maximise our space.

So what do you think?

My Creative Space

Preparations for the Kustom Kraft market on Sunday are in full swing and we have been very busy little rabbits. Cloud has been making use of some of my Spoonflower swatches to create these awesome buttons.

Large Covered Buttons

We got a rubber stamp made up so that we can stamp our paper bags with our details. Unfortunately we had to remove the rabbit from the logo as he probably wouldn't have shown up very well in just one colour. Still looks pretty awesome though!

Voodoo Rabbit RubberStamp

I've been playing around with making some rabbit shaped price tags. I have a large computer controlled cutting machine that I have been playing with to create these.

Swing Tags

And because you can never have too many projects on the go at once, here is a work in progress shot of the top I am making to wear on Sunday to the market. It features my Skull pinstripe fabric printed at Spoonflower. It still requires the arm holes and sides to be bound and then about a gazillion eyelets will be inserted along each side seam so that the sides can be laced up. Last but not least some buttons need to be sewn down the front.

My Creative Space

Here's a peek at my Creative Space (I've been following this blogger meme for a while now over at kootooyo and thought it was about time that I joined in).

Now that I am a full time Voodoo Rabbit, I've been concentrating on making more handmade items to sell in our Etsy store and at the upcoming Kustom Kraft markets.

Creative Space 02

I have been busy cutting out panels and sewing zippers to make new cushion cover designs. The first batch are made with my Gingham Invaded fabric collection that I have had digitally printed at Spoonflower. You can see some swatches of some other fabrics I am working on in the background.

While I am upstairs doing this, I am also baking up a batch of beads that Cloud & I made at a polymer clay workshop we attended last Wednesday night. Here they are fresh out of the oven:

Kustom Krafts - 08.11.09

I know it's a little late, but here are some pictures from our first market, Kustom Krafts.

So much stuff for one little market stall! Good thing my car has a big boot - there's three tables in there plus all our stock.

We set up in an L shape - below is the back table which had all our fabric bolts and our cushion covers. The sign on the wall looks a little bit too temporary for me - I'd really like a professional banner done but I think that will require some saving up. It's more important to spend our money on new stock!

On the left side, in the corner we had a small table with our cutting mat. The last side of the L shape was a table with our precut fat quarters, vintage fabrics and our button board. I did take photos of the whole stall but they came out blurry - maybe I was shaking with excitement / anticipation?

We made a board to display our buttons and badges on by covering MDF with foam and then stapling some velvet panne (leftovers from Ky's sewing) over the top. We put a little hinged stand on the back so it wouldn't fall over.

The button board was in front of the open window - it would have been better on the other table because it was hard to see the buttons (especially in the afternoon) because they were in shadow. It's little things that can make a big difference I think.

Ky & I spent a fair amount of time sewing our little buttons onto their cards but I think they look really cute packaged up that way - a lot nicer than just grabbing them out of the tube and putting them into a plastic bag!

We also designed and made aprons for the stall - we worked out how big change bags were for the pocket divisions, had a pocket for our rotary cutter & i-phones, and a super secret pocket behind the front one for putting our notes into. Here's Ky in hers...

The fabric for the front pocket is 'Fifties Kitchen' and it was one of our most popular fabrics that day. We used our red cotton heading tape for the strings.

And of course, we can't forget the cars! I love the red & white one best...

We didn't make a lot of money or sales on the day - the market venue was changed from the last time so maybe people couldn't find it? We did get a great practice run for our stall setup, we met some really lovely people and we were given lots of feedback about what we should stock more of.

The next Kustom Krafts market is tentatively scheduled to happen in January, 2010 and we'll be there again.

Let us know if you have any suggestions about how we can improve our stall by leaving a comment :D

Brand New! Voodoo Rabbit Fabric: Spidery Web Black

We have a new fabric available for sale on our Spoonflower shop - a simple black spiderweb pattern over a plain background (the colour of the base cloth). We showed the sample of this at Kustom Krafts last weekend and it received a good response so we decided to make it available for purchase.

Spidery Web - Black

It is based on my orange and purple spiderweb Halloween design (also available on Spoonflower).

Spidery Web - Halloween

The initial orange and purple design came into being as an entry for Spoonflower's Halloween themed Fabric of the Week competition. I've always liked spider web patterning and one of my favourite fabrics is a black spiderweb lace. I bought it from Spotlight once but have never been able to find it again. As soon as we track some down we'll be stocking it though.

I plan to make a few more colour variations of the spider web design soon - we've had a request for the black web on a fluro zombie green background. Leave a comment with any other colour combinations you think would look good or just let us know what you think of the design.

PS: If you come you can also see for yourselves that Ky isn't just a figment of Cloud's imagination...
