New in Store - 24th January 2016

I've almost caught up with the backlog of product listings I have to do, of course every time I think that I'm done more stock arrives, LOL. This week I have some very nice beach themed fabrics from Riley Blake Designs, Flamingos from Michael Miller and Timeless Treasures. I'm very excited to receive the new Doctor Who fabric range from Springs Creative, consisting of a fabric panel with two co-ordinating fabric.

On the patterns side of things I now have Sew Sweetness patterns by Sara Lawson. I have been sewing up the Ansel Camera Bag this week, you can checkout my progress over on Instagram or Facebook. If you are a fan of Soft and Stable byAnnie you might want to have a look at our new fusible foam interfacing. This product is from Australian brand Matilda's Own but it is made in the same factory as the product from byAnnie. It is also similar to Pellon Foam Flex but is slightly thinner.

New in Store - 14th December 2014

I was hoping to have a new website up and running by now but since that doesn't look like it is going to happen soon I thought I had better list some of the new fabrics up on our current site. I listed a whopping 44 fabrics this week from all of your favourite designers including Riley Blake Designs, Kokka, Michael Miller, Timeless Treasures and of course Alexander Henry. There are so many that I have had to divide this post up into several images montages, enjoy :)

My Name's Steven...

Steven Seagull...

LOL that joke is not getting old at all :D and I've been making it all week since I made this little guy on Monday.
Specs
Steven is approximately 23cm (9") tall when sitting. He is quite firmly stuffed with polyester toy fill and weighs 210g. Cloud chose the fabric for him and his main body is a Tula Pink design from her Salt Water range. We think that the colours are very reminiscent of a hot summers day at the beach eating fish and chips. The yellow on his beak and feet was quite difficult to photograph, it is less orange and more golden in reality.
Give me a chip
Difficulty
I made Steven up in around 2hrs and would rate him at a basic - intermediate difficulty level. I am rating him a little higher than most Funky Friends Factory toys as there are foot pads and a gusset. These two items can be a little tricky for newer sewists.

Tip
Rather than clipping seams I like to use pinking shears. The pinked edge helps the seam sit flatter once it is turned out and also shouldn't fray as much.
Any seams that are going to be under strain once the toy has been turned right sides out should only have minimal or no clipping if you can get away with it. For example the back, sides, under the beak and opening where the toy is turned out through, otherwise they may start to tear if you like to stuff your toys quite firmly.
If you would like to recreate Steven you will need the following:
If you have made a Funky Friends Factory seagull? We'd love to see pictures on our Facebook page.

Last Chance Fabrics

Due to the Brisbane Craft and Quilt Fair I haven't had the time to upload any new stock to the website in the last two weeks. Never fear there is plenty to come over the next few weeks. In the meantime I thought I would share a few last chance fabrics with you. There is less than 2m left of each of these fabrics remaining in stock and most will not be restocked. If you have been thinking about purchasing any of these prints this may be your last chance.

Fabric Friday - Beach Days

Spring has sprung which, in Brisbane, means Summer is here! Cloud has been dreaming of lazy afternoons on the beach, eating fish & chips with lemon, then walking along the tide line with a nice cold icy-pole. The sound of the sea gulls and waves crashing and the bright yellow sun reflecting off the sand and water. This week's Fabric Friday is Cloud's take on her perfect summer afternoon.

Sewing a Circle Skirt with Voodoo Rabbit Fabric and Funky Friends Factory

A few weekends ago Voodoo Rabbit (Ky and Cloud) had a fun filled sewing day with Pauline from Funky Friends Factory. Pauline and I sewed up some cool 50s style circle skirts and Cloud started a Hummingbird inspired pencil/straight skirt (more on that skirt in a future post ;)

Although a deft hand at sewing soft toys Pauline hasn't really sewn clothing before so this was a new challenge for her and I got a chance to test out my teaching skills.

Cutting out
Pockets successfully attached to the front of the skirt, now what?
Pauline's first invisible zipper, looks pretty good doesn't it :)

Pauline testing the twirl factor of her skirt - it met her approval :) If you come and visit us at Rockabilly Riot this is probably what you are going to find her doing.

Voodoo Rabbit have some Circle Skirt classes coming up where you can learn how to sew a Full Circle Skirt with side seam pockets, invisible back zipper and a waistband. You will also learn how to fussy cut your fabric so that you get the best-looking skirt possible from your chosen design.
Convenient pockets sewn into the side seams.
If you would like to be part of our Circle Skirt workshop the first class will be held on Sunday July 21 from 10am - 5pm (1hr break for lunch) and the second will be in September. More information and sign up can be found in our webstore: Learn to Sew - Circle Skirt (July 21).
Finished circle skirts, what do you think? Pauline used Tiki Winki Poppy by Michael Miller and I used Hula Skull Black by Alexander Henry.
