My Creative Space...

This week we are starting preparations for the Kustom Kraft market on May 23rd. It will only be the third market that we have done and we thought that it was time to spruce up the stall a bit.

First up some red and black felt bunting for along the front of the table.

Ironing bias binding, the epitome of excitement and burnt fingers

Pinned up and ready for sewing

Even though we predominantly sell fabric and buttons at our stall it is always nice to round things out with a few handmade items.

Some Voodoo Rabbit skins ready for Cloud to put together this weekend
(told you I would be cracking the whip)

Don't forget to check out Kirsty's blog for some more creative spaces.

Redlands Quilt Extravaganza 2013

The Redland Quilt Extravaganza was held last weekend and we were lucky enough to be invited to be vendors again. I thought that I would do a real quick overview, sorry for the bad iPhone photos. Also I didn't get a chance to photograph any of the quilts as I couldn't leave the stand for too long.
We decided to trial having bolts of fabric and cutting on the stand which is something we haven't done since we could fit all of our fabrics in one car :) It seemed to work out well, we are hoping to do something similar at the upcoming Craft and Quilt Fair in October.
Market display setup isn't really my forte but hopefully it didn't look too bad. The big sellers of the weekend were the Quilting News Fabric (sold out), Ladies Diary Fashion Plates (sold out) and the Sew Retro Montage and Notions fabrics (still available).  The transportation bunting kits, sample hanging around the table, was also popular.
The Quilt Extravaganza is a community event so there are always displays from a number of the craft guilds including Queensland Quilters, Australian Sewing Guild, Embroiderers Guild and the Lacemakers Guild.
Here is the quilt that I didn't win in the raffle *sigh*. Maybe next time :)
Here is a pic of the one other quilt that I photographed at the Redlands Quilt Extravaganza, for some reason it kept grabbing my attention :) It was sewn up by a lady in her 80s and if you look really close at the bottom right panel you can see a piece of Black Echino Spider and Web Lace from Kokka.
Our favourite vendor is JoyPatch, Joy is the loveliest person you could ever meet and has been our neighbour for the last two Quilt Extravaganza's. Sunday morning was a bit quiet so I decided to try my hand at English paper piecing. I had been watching Joy working on her pieces over the weekend and she was kind enough to give me a quick lesson.
This is as far as I got, I have no idea what to do with it now. I'm open to suggestion?
There were a few other vendors including Wayne Achilles Wood Turning, he specialises in hand turning sewing and craft accessories which were pretty nifty. CherraBella Buttons who hand-makes very cute porcelain buttons, I was extremely jealous of her black and pink display stand. Bayside Stitchcraft and Melanie Screech Hand Craft were also present, sorry my photos were blurry of these two.
The Quilt Extravaganza is moving to a bi-yearly event so hopefully we will see everyone again in 2015.

Travelling Bunnies - Kyoto Day Trip (Day 4)

On Saturday we went to Kyoto for the day. It takes about a half hour from Osaka on the Special Rapid train and is really cheap (only 530 yen each way). On the 21st of each month there is a huge outdoor market in the grounds of Toji Temple.
Japanese couple in traditional dress kindly posed for a photo

The market was very crowded and hot

We walked to get to the market. It was a super humid day in Kyoto so we were extremely hot bunnies! The market was big, loud & colourful. On offer were ceramics, second hand kimonos and yukata, fresh octopus, tea, mystery foods on sticks, and a mixture of second hand goods (a bit like a trash and treasure / flea market set up).

Octopus
There was so much to buy but we restrained ourselves - we need to keep our baggage allowance free for fabric. We walked back to the station for lunch and air-con.

Kyoto Station itself is a popular landmark - the roof is amazing. According to Wikipedia it is "Japan's second-largest train station building and is one of the country's largest buildings. It includes a shopping mall, hotel, movie theatre, department store and more under the 15 storey roof. Photos of the roof just do not do it justice, nor do they impart the scale of the place - it really is a place to see to believe. There used to be a cool Tezuka (creator of Astro Boy and Kimba the White Lion) museum shop at the train station but we were very disapointed to discover that it closed earlier this year.

Kyoto train station
After lunch we jumped on a bus to our favourite fabric shop in Kyoto - Nomura Tailor for a spot of fabric shopping. Cloud's feet by this stage were swollen up to the point that her ankle bones couldn't be seen anymore - they had moved beyond 'cankles' to 'thankles' (ie: swollen up to become part of her thighs :P). Time to head home!

My Creative Space

Last week I made up a couple of cushion covers for a custom order.

Echino Cushion Glasses Green

The fabrics chosen were Green Echino Glasses by Kokka (pictured above) and Domestic Diva Utensil Damask Red (which I forgot to photograph).

The Echino cotton/linen fabric was such a joy to sew with that I decided that we needed to make more cushions to sell at the Marky Markets last Sunday.

Echino Cushion Glasses Black

Echino Cushion Camera Purple

Echino Cushion Camera Blue
Blue Camera

Unfortunately none of them sold at the market but they will all be available from our Coorparoo store from tomorrow.

Badges

We also made up a heap of 25mm fabric covered badges. We have used a variety of commercial and Voodoo Rabbit original fabrics and have covered the fabric with Matte Heat n Bond Iron-on Vinyl to help stop the fabric warping when it goes through the badge press.

My Creative Space

Lots of sewing has actually been happening here at Voodoo Rabbit : )  This week we have been making up samples of some new Funky Friends Factory patterns that we are stocking in our Coorparoo Store. All of these patterns are designed by the very talented Pauline, a Brisbane local.

Funky Friends Factory Sea Turtle Sample 02
Stu the Sea Turtle
- Shellburne Circus Wheels Black by Windham (shell and beak)
- Shellburne Circus Flags Black by Windham (head and flippers)
- Ta Dot Black by Michael Miller (tummy and sides)
We found that this pattern went together quite easily, the trickiest bit is sewing the curves but as long as you go along slowly it isn't too hard. We used 3 fabrics but he could easily be made up in just two if you make his tummy out of the same fabric as the shell and his sides out of the same fabric as the head.

Funky Friends Factory Hippo Sample 03
Heather Hippo
- Apple Dot Autum by Sandi Henderson for Micheal Miller (main body)
- Early Bird Yellow Crosshatch by Cosmo Cricket for Andover Fabrics (tummy, ears and feet)
This pattern was a bit trickier, as soon as you introduce gussets, foot pads and snouts the difficulty level increases. The result in well worth the effort though.

Funky Friends Factory Frog Sample 02
Prince Charming
- Send in the Crowns Plum by Micheal Miller (main body)
- Small Leaves Black by STOF (tummy)
This is probably the easiest of the 4 patterns so far. There are only 2 main pattern pieces plus the eyes and crown. Once again as long as you sew slowly around the curves you shouldn't run into too many problems. The pattern suggests using plastic pallets in the feet but we found that this didn't look very good since we used cotton fabric (would be fine in fleece) so we have just used poly fill.

Funky Friends Factory Aardvark Sample 02
Artie Aardvark
- Early Bird Geometric Floral by Cosmo Cricket for Andover Fabrics (main body)
- Early Bird Yellow Crosshatch by Cosmo Cricket for Andover Fabrics (tummy, ears and feet)
The aardvark would be on par with the hippo in regards to difficulty level, the snout is a bit trickier and we recommend sewing it in by hand as there just isn't enough space to get you machine in.

We still have a platypus and lion pattern to make samples up so stay tuned. I have also just found a tutorial on Pauline's blog on how to sew in the perfect foot pads, which I will be following dilegently next time I need to sew a footpad in.
