New in Store - 16th October 2016

The Craft and Quilt Fair was a great success last weekend, a big thank you for everyone who popped in to see us :) The cork fabric was super popular at the show but I still have a few colours in stock. I have also added 4 bright new colours to the website.

New this week, we have fabric for both the dog and cat lovers out there with three new designs of each from Cosmo Textiles, Japan. All of them are printed on canvas weight cotton except for the two blue cats designs which are on light weight cotton. I have also finally listed the Ultra Firm Necessary Clutch Wallet Interfacing kit. If you prefer your wallets to be very firmly structured then this is the kit for you.

New in Store - 15th May 2016

It has been a bit of a crazy week online this week. I accidentally deleted a few hundred products off my webpage so I am very behind my regular new product listing schedule. I have re-added approximately 1/3 of the missing products but thought I should add a few new products as well. 

This week we have some new super hero fabric featuring Black Widow, I'm not overly keen to stock licensed fabric but I'm kind of partial to this one :)

There is also some new skulls and spiders from the Lost & Found Halloween collection from Riley Blake Designs and some Japanese prints from Cosmo Textiles. 

If you are into embroidery or cross stitch you may like to try the new snap frames from Birch. Four plastic C-shaped clamps hold your fabric onto the bars. Tension is easy to adjust so you will have a smooth stitching surface around entire frame without hoop wrinkles.

New in Store - 28th February 2016

February was a big month for new fabric arriving. This week I have listed lots of new cat fabric for all of the cat lovers out there. If you prefer dogs, never fear I haven't forgotten you, there aren't as many good dog fabrics out there but I get them when I can :) Have a read of the Kitty and Canine Chronicles if you are after a bit of a chuckle :D

New in Store - 3rd January 2016

Even though the shop is closed for the week there is still so much to be done. We have pulled out the built-in change room and shelves from the back of the shop. This will be great for the classes we are planning on running this year as there is going to be a little bit more space :D New classes will be starting at the end of January and I will have more details available in the next week or so.

It's here, the Doctor Who Tardis fabric has arrived and is now available in the online store !! I have also received a number of Alexander Henry fabric as well, including Sebastian Ghastlie and pinup girls. 

In other news I'm off to the Quilt Market in Houston this week so I keep an eye on our Facebook page as I'll be posting photos of all the cool new fabric that is going to be released. Michelle from Lemon Jellie Stitches will be looking after the shop while I am away so both the online and Annerley stores will remain open and postal orders will be shipped as per normal.

New in Store - 19 October 2014

It has been a busy few weeks with the Brisbane Craft and Quilt Show. I think we are finally back to normal so that means I have time to start listing new fabric on the website. We are introducing a new range of Tips and Tricks classes to help you learn new techniques to help you produce professional results with your dressmaking. The first one is on buttonholes, in this intensive full day class you will learn how to sew buttonholes on your sewing machine with confidence! You will create a sample-sewing workbook while learning a variety of techniques and strategies for taming buttonholes of all varieties. 

This class will be run by Steph C of Cake Patterns, if you have attended any of Steph's other classes you will know how much fun you can have while learning very practical sewing skills :)

Fabric Friday - Mix and Match with Denim

Denim is a great fabric which can be used in many different types of sewing projects. Our 6oz indigo denim is similar weight to our regular cotton fabrics and is perfect for making skirts, bags and pants. It is 100% cotton with no elastaine content so it will not stretch. At $12/m and 150cm wide it is relatively inexpensive, making it a great base fabric for many projects which can then be dressed up with a more expensive feature fabric. 

Indigo coloured denim goes particularly well with fabrics that contain reds, oranges and some blues. Here are few examples of fabric combinations and projects we have made.

I'm always amazed at how well blue and orange compliment each other. I shouldn't be as they are on opposite sides of the colour wheel which makes them complementary colours. The burnt oranges in this print by Parsons Gray certainly work well with the indigo blue. 

This is my favourite combo, indigo denim with Lupe Natural by Alexander Henry. Once again it is the oranges in the Lupe print that work so well with the indigo denim. I think that the blues also complement nicely. 

These are the fabrics that I used for my Hummingbird Skirt which is currently my favourite skirt to wear :) 

Don't you think that this next combo with Sasparilla Alphabet Blocks Multi by Riley Blake Design would make the cutest pair of shorts for a little one? 

Denim is a great base fabric for a satchel bag where you can use your feature fabric on just the flap. On this small satchel we have teamed the denim with Animal Circle Canvas Red by Cosmo Textiles. Red and blue are both primary colours so they work really well together. Don't you think that the deep red of the feature print just pops against the indigo blue making a very striking bag?

On the larger tote we have used Samurai and Geisha Seafoam by Trans-Pacific Textiles for the flap, the blues and greens blend together nicely with just enough red/orange for a bit of contrast.

I'll leave you with a few more combinations that you might like to try out.

Hey hey hey! 

I'm a crafty guest blogger today! How exciting... I get to choose the fabrics for the Voodoo Rabbit FABRIC FRIDAY.

I love visiting the Voodoo Rabbit fabric shop as I get to see all the new fabrics as they come in, which is cool because I already have LOTS of Voodoo Rabbit's fabrics as there are just so many cool fabrics for making my Funky Friends!

So when I got given "MY BRIEF" - choose 6 fabrics for the Fabric Friday - I picked 6 of my favourites that I have used for my toys....

Ky took one look and I knew she wasn't impressed?

What??? They have to ALL go together?

:(

Mmmmmmmm?

OK, we reached a compromise, and I chose co-ordinating fabrics for 3 Funky Friends! :)

This is my Ollie Owl selection, the Funky Owls Cream by Timeless Treasures is so cute for Ollie's tummy and the colours are amazing, I had a hard time limiting myself to only 2 co-ordinating fabrics. (Kylie managed to restrain me!) I chose Premium Solid Tomato by Northcott for his feet and Victorian Dream Steampunk Cogs Blue by Quilting Treasures for my owls Face, Wings and Tail. Toot Toot, too CUTE!

This is my Kawaii Kuties Bunny selection. It was hard to choose JUST ONE kawaii fabric as Voodoo Rabbit has such a cool selection. Woodland Friends - Tea Party Deer Cream by Cosmo Textiles Co has sweet bunnies on it so I co-ordinated it with Premium Solid Bubblegum by Northcott for a girly bunny. 

And finally I got to choose some fabrics for my NEWEST Funky baby.... Igor Iguana. I used Salt Water Ocean Ponies Seaweed by Free Spirit for his body and Premium Solid Jungle by Northcott for his Legs and Beard. I think some lime yellow felt would make this combo really POP!!!

Aaaaaaaaaaaah!

Do, I HAVE to stop????

Totes Cute Tote Bag

When we order in fabric we ask, "What would you make from it?" before we buy it. If the fabric doesn't talk to us, we don't get it in. We had always planned to make a kid's version of the You Sew Girl Small Tote and Satchel but we were waiting for the perfect fabric. This ultra kawaii animal print fabric from Cosmo just screamed "Totes Cute Tote" when we saw the sample :) The fabric is a heavy canvas base cloth so it is very durable and the rich red background colour looks great teamed up with our Indigo Denim.

Difficulty

The Small Tote and Satchel pattern is a great project for a beginner as it contains lots of tips on the basics of bag making and sewing. For more advanced sewists it is a quick and easy project that can be whipped up in an afternoon / evening session (I think this one took me 3-4 hours in total).

Interfacing

After my Alexander Henry Mirage Carry All Bag blog post, Nicole from You Sew Girl suggested that I try using Medium-Heavy interfacing paired with H630 wadding. This would give me the structure I was after but not be as bulky as the Medium Interfacing paired with H640 wadding combo. I am happy to say that this is now my favourite way to interface my bags :)

Options

Most You Sew Girl patterns come with a number of different finishing options. I have made the longer version of the bag, with a flap and internal zippered pocket. I think it is always nice to have a least one pocket on the inside for storing little bits and pieces. I particularly like the red zipper against the blue fabric. If you can't match a zipper to the main colour of a fabric don't be afraid to try matching it to one of the other colours in the print.

I have used plastic looplocs and tri-glide with 38mm webbing to make an urban style adjustable shoulder strap. You can find the tutorial on how to make an adjustable bag strap here.

Like all of Nicole's pattern the Small Tote and Satchel is very versatile and allows you to make many variations using just the one pattern. These are just a few of the variations that Nicole has made, you can find more images as well as descriptions on her website.

Voodoo Rabbit Fabric Facebook sale

It is Facebook Sale time again! We’ve got lots of remnants and orphan fat quarters up for grabs. The sale includes loads of out of print fabrics – once they sell out they’re gone for good. Don’t miss out!

There are over 100 items in this sale so we won’t be clogging up your Facebook feed by uploading them all one at a time. Instead, we will be uploading all items to this Photo Album on Facebook at 5pm on Sunday 16th June (Brisbane, Australia time).

There will be fabric from Alexander Henry, Tula Pink, Michael Miller, Kokka, Lecien and Cosmo Textiles.

The sales items will be available for 2 hrs only at which point we will be closing off the sale. First in gets the goodies!
